Longmen Grottoes

The Longmen Grottoes are Buddhist cave temples cut into limestone cliffs on both banks of the Yi river south of Luoyang, Henan, China. Begun around 493 under the Northern Wei, after the court moved to Luoyang, they were extended under the Tang dynasty and contain about 100,000 statues, including the colossal Vairocana Buddha of the Fengxian temple, completed in 675. They are a World Heritage Site.
