Louis Archinard

1850–1932 · 20th century

Louis Archinard was a French army officer who led the conquest of much of the western Sudan, now Mali. As commander of French Sudan from 1888 he took Segou in 1890 and campaigned against Ahmadu Tall of the Toucouleur Empire and Samori Toure. His aggressive campaigns, often undertaken without orders from Paris, laid the foundations of the colony of French Sudan.
