Lucius Junius Brutus

late 6th century BCE · 6th century BCE

Lucius Junius Brutus was the legendary founder of the Roman Republic. According to Roman tradition he led the revolt that expelled the last king, Tarquinius Superbus, in 509 BCE and became one of the first two consuls. Later Romans honoured him as a model of devotion to liberty, and he was said to have had his own sons executed for plotting to restore the monarchy.
