Ludowingians

11th century–1247 · 11th century · Also known as Ludowingian dynasty

The Ludowingians were a German noble dynasty that ruled Thuringia as landgraves from 1131 and also held Hesse. Founded by Louis the Bearded in the 11th century, they built the Wartburg and made their court a centre of courtly poetry. Landgrave Louis IV married Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, and the line died out with Henry Raspe in 1247, after which Thuringia passed to the Wettins.
