Madiun Affair

1948 · 20th century · Also known as Madiun uprising · Part of the Indonesian National Revolution

The Madiun Affair was a communist uprising in September 1948 centred on the town of Madiun in East Java, during Indonesia's war of independence against the Netherlands. Leftist troops and supporters of the Communist Party, whose leader Musso had recently returned from the Soviet Union, seized the town and proclaimed a new government. The Republican army crushed the revolt within weeks and Musso was killed, leaving lasting hostility between the army and the communists.
