Madrid Protocol of 1885
The Madrid Protocol of 1885 was an agreement signed on 7 March 1885 by Britain, Germany and Spain. Britain and Germany recognised Spanish sovereignty over the Sulu archipelago, and Spain gave up its claims to North Borneo, where the British North Borneo Company had been chartered. It settled the rivalry over the region, though the Sulu claim to Sabah lived on.
