Makaba II

d. 1824 · 19th century

Makaba II was chief of the Bangwaketse, a Tswana people of present-day Botswana, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A successful raider and trader in cattle, ivory and furs, he made the Bangwaketse one of the strongest Tswana states, and European travellers visited his large town. He was killed in 1824 during the upheavals of that period, when his people were attacked by migrating Kololo forces under Sebetwane.
