Maku

Maku is a town in West Azerbaijan province in the far north-west of Iran, built in a narrow gorge beneath an overhanging cliff near the borders with Turkey and Nakhchivan and close to Mount Ararat. From the mid-18th century to the 1920s it was ruled by hereditary khans of the Bayat tribe, who kept their position under the Qajars as governors of a frontier district.
