Malayan Communist Party

1930–1989 · 20th century · Also known as Communist Party of Malaya

The Malayan Communist Party was a communist party founded in 1930, drawing its support mainly from the Chinese of Malaya. It led the main resistance to the Japanese occupation and, under Chin Peng, launched an armed revolt in 1948 that the British fought as the Malayan Emergency until 1960. Its remaining guerrillas fought a second insurgency along the Thai border until a peace agreement signed at Hat Yai in December 1989.
