Māori Language Act 1987
The Māori Language Act 1987 made te reo Māori an official language of New Zealand and gave the right to speak it in legal proceedings. It also created the Māori Language Commission to promote the language. Passed after a Waitangi Tribunal finding that the language was a treasure protected by the Treaty of Waitangi, it was replaced by the Māori Language Act 2016.
