March of Ancona
The March of Ancona was a frontier province in central Italy on the Adriatic coast, roughly the modern region of Marche. It took shape under the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th and 12th centuries and was recovered by the papacy under Innocent III, after which the Papal States governed it as a province until its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. Its towns, led by Ancona, enjoyed wide self-government.
