1887–1940 · 20th century

Marcus Garvey was a Jamaican political activist who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in 1914 and led a mass movement of black pride and Pan-Africanism, based in New York from 1916. In the early 1920s his organisation negotiated to settle African Americans in Liberia, but the Liberian government turned against the plan. He was deported from the United States in 1927.
