Mariana Islands
The Mariana Islands are a chain of fifteen volcanic islands in the western Pacific, including Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Rota. Settled by the ancestors of the Chamorro about 3,500 years ago, they were colonised by Spain from 1668. After 1898 Guam went to the United States and the rest to Germany and then Japan; since 1978 the northern islands have formed a US commonwealth.
