Tinian
Tinian is one of the three main islands of the Northern Mariana Islands in the western Pacific, just south-west of Saipan. Under Japanese rule it was covered with sugar plantations. Captured by US forces in July and August 1944, it became one of the largest airbases in the world, from which the B-29 bombers that dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki took off in August 1945.
