Mary I of England

1516–1558 · 16th century · Also known as Mary Tudor, Bloody Mary

Mary I was queen of England and Ireland from 1553 to 1558, the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. She restored Catholicism, married Philip II of Spain in 1554 and had about 280 Protestants burned for heresy. Her reign saw the plantation of Laois and Offaly in Ireland and, in 1558, the loss of Calais, England's last possession in France.
