Masaccio

1401–1428 · 15th century

Masaccio (1401–1428) was a Florentine painter, the first great painter of the Italian Renaissance. In a short career he applied Brunelleschi's linear perspective and a new sculptural naturalism in works such as the Holy Trinity fresco in Santa Maria Novella and the frescoes of the Brancacci Chapel, which later artists including Michelangelo studied. He died in Rome at the age of 26.
