Mazyar

d. 840 · 9th century · Also known as Mazyar ibn Qarin

Mazyar was the last prince of the Qarinvand dynasty of Tabaristan, in the mountains south of the Caspian Sea. He converted to Islam under the caliph al-Ma'mun and governed Tabaristan, but in 839 he rebelled against al-Mu'tasim and the Tahirid governors of Khurasan. Betrayed and captured, he was taken to Samarra and executed in 840. Later Iranian tradition remembered him as a defender of Iran against Arab rule.
