Menes

r. c. 3100 BCE

Menes was the king whom later Egyptian tradition and Greek historians credited with uniting Upper and Lower Egypt and founding the First Dynasty around 3100 BCE. Manetho and Herodotus said he founded Memphis. Egyptologists usually identify him with Narmer or his successor Hor-Aha, since the name does not appear clearly on contemporary monuments.
