Merck is a German chemical and pharmaceutical company based in Darmstadt and one of the oldest such firms in the world. It traces its origins to the Engel pharmacy in Darmstadt, acquired by the Merck family in 1668, and began industrial production of alkaloids and other chemicals in the 19th century. Its former American branch became the separate company Merck & Co. after the First World War.
