Meskhetian Turks

The Meskhetian Turks are a Turkish-speaking Muslim people originally from Meskheti, the region of south-western Georgia around Akhaltsikhe along the Turkish border. Many descend from the Muslim population of the Ottoman Childir Eyalet. In November 1944 Stalin's government deported them, some 90,000 people, to Central Asia; most never returned, and they now live in Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey and the United States.
