Mikhail of Tver

1271–1318 · 14th century · Also known as Mikhail Yaroslavich

Mikhail of Tver (Mikhail Yaroslavich) was prince of Tver from 1285 and grand prince of Vladimir from 1305. His rivalry with Yury of Moscow for the favour of the Golden Horde led to war; he defeated Yury in 1317 but was summoned to the Horde, tried and executed in 1318. The Russian Orthodox Church venerates him as a saint and martyr.
