Millet system
The millet system was the arrangement by which the Ottoman Empire organised its non-Muslim subjects into religious communities. Communities such as the Orthodox Christians, Armenians and Jews had considerable autonomy over religious, educational and legal matters under their own leaders. The system helped the Ottomans govern a diverse population.
