Mogok

Mogok is a town in the hills of the Mandalay Region of Myanmar, north-east of Mandalay, famous for centuries as the world's main source of fine rubies, including the deep red 'pigeon's blood' stones, as well as sapphires and other gems. The mines were long controlled by Burmese kings and, from 1889, by a British company. They remain an important and controversial source of revenue for the country.
