Kyaukse
Kyaukse is a town and district south of Mandalay in central Myanmar, on a plain watered by the Zawgyi and Panlaung rivers. Its weirs and canals, among the oldest irrigation works in the country, made it the rice granary of the dry zone, and the Burmans who settled there in the 9th century drew on it to build the Pagan Kingdom. Control of Kyaukse remained a key to power for the later kingdoms of Myinsaing, Pinya and Ava.
