Monastery of the Cross

11th century · 11th century

The Monastery of the Cross is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in Jerusalem, built in the eleventh century by the Georgian monk Giorgi-Prokhore on the traditional site where the tree for Christ's cross grew. For centuries it was a centre of Georgian learning in the Holy Land, and it holds a fresco said to portray the poet Shota Rustaveli. It passed to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem in 1685.
