Mondego
The Mondego is the longest river lying entirely within Portugal, about 230 kilometres long, rising in the Serra da Estrela and flowing past Coimbra to the Atlantic at Figueira da Foz. In the 9th to 11th centuries it marked the shifting frontier between the Christian north and al-Andalus. Coimbra, on its banks, was an early capital of the Kingdom of Portugal.
