Muhammad Shah (Mughal emperor)

1702–1748 · 18th century

Muhammad Shah was Mughal emperor from 1719 to 1748. His long reign saw the provinces slip from central control as governors founded hereditary states in Hyderabad, Bengal and Awadh, where he appointed Saadat Ali Khan in 1722. In 1739 Nader Shah of Iran sacked Delhi and carried off the Peacock Throne, a blow from which the empire never recovered.
