Nana Olomu

1852–1916 · 19th century

Nana Olomu was an Itsekiri merchant prince who served as governor of the Benin River in the Niger Delta from 1884 and controlled much of its palm-oil trade. His power over trade brought him into conflict with British officials, and in 1894 British forces destroyed his fortified town of Ebrohimi. He was exiled to the Gold Coast and allowed to return in 1906.
