Nassau Family Pact

1783 · 18th century

The Nassau Family Pact was a succession agreement concluded in 1783 between the branches of the House of Nassau. It provided that their lands would pass to the other branch if one line died out in the male line. When William III of the Netherlands died in 1890 leaving only a daughter, Wilhelmina, the pact gave the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to Adolphe, the former Duke of Nassau, ending its personal union with the Netherlands.
