National Liberation Alliance
The National Liberation Alliance was a left-wing popular front in Brazil founded in 1935, opposing fascism, imperialism and large landowners, with the communist leader Luís Carlos Prestes as honorary president. The Vargas government banned it in July 1935, and in November communists linked to it launched military uprisings in Natal, Recife and Rio de Janeiro. Their defeat was followed by mass arrests and helped pave the way for the Estado Novo.
