Nechtan mac Der Ilei

d. 732 · 8th century · Also known as Nechtan son of Der-Ilei

Nechtan mac Der Ilei was king of the Picts from about 706 to 724 and briefly again around 728–729. He brought the Pictish church into line with Rome, adopting the Roman date of Easter after consulting Abbot Ceolfrith of Wearmouth and Jarrow, and in 717 expelled the clergy of Iona who refused it. He retired to a monastery in 724 and was drawn into the civil wars that brought Óengus son of Fergus to power.
