Negasi Krestos

d. c. 1703 · 17th century

Negasi Krestos was a Shewan noble claiming Solomonic descent who around 1682 established an autonomous lordship in northern Shewa, in central Ethiopia, as the Gondar emperors weakened. His successors, first called meridazmach and later negus, built Shewa into a powerful kingdom whose last independent ruler, Menelik II, became emperor and founded modern Ethiopia.
