Gondar
Gondar is a city in north-western Ethiopia, north of Lake Tana, founded as the royal capital by Emperor Fasilides around 1636. It remained the seat of the Ethiopian emperors until the mid-19th century, and its walled royal enclosure, Fasil Ghebbi, with castles and churches, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In November 1941 it was the last stronghold of the Italian forces in East Africa to surrender.
