Negus nagast

Also known as king of kings

Negus nagast, meaning king of kings, was the title of the Aksumite and later Ethiopian monarchs. In the Aksumite Empire it signalled a federal structure in which tributary rulers acknowledged Aksumite suzerainty while keeping local authority. Comparable king-of-kings titles appear elsewhere on the site, such as the Gupta Maharajadhiraja, the Sasanian shahanshah and the Benin Oba's style as child of the king of kings.
