Nez Perce War

1877 · 19th century

The Nez Perce War of 1877 was fought between the United States Army and bands of the Nez Perce who refused to move onto a reduced reservation in Idaho. Led by Chief Joseph, Looking Glass and other chiefs, some 750 men, women and children retreated for nearly four months and some 1,900 kilometres across Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, winning several engagements on the way towards refuge in Canada. Surrounded in the Bear Paw Mountains, about 65 kilometres short of the border, most surrendered on 5 October 1877, and they were exiled to Indian Territory.
