Niassa Province
Niassa is the largest and most thinly populated province of Mozambique, in the north-west of the country between Lake Malawi and the Lugenda river, with its capital at Lichinga. Its highlands were home to Yao chiefdoms such as that of Mataka in the nineteenth century. From 1891 to 1929 it formed part of the territory administered by the chartered Niassa Company.
