Nian Rebellion
The Nian Rebellion was a large armed uprising in northern China in the mid-nineteenth century, fought largely by mounted bands across the provinces north of the Huai River. Occurring alongside the Taiping and Dungan rebellions, it consumed imperial revenues and devastated agriculture. It exposed the inability of the Qing Empire's regular armies to suppress large-scale domestic insurgency.
