Northern Cape

The Northern Cape is the largest province of South Africa by area and the least populous, created in 1994 from the north-western part of the former Cape Province. Its capital is Kimberley, centre of the diamond rush of the 1870s. Much of it is semi-desert, including Namaqualand and parts of the Kalahari, and it has large Afrikaans-speaking and Tswana populations.
