Novocherkassk
Novocherkassk is a city in Rostov oblast, southern Russia, founded in 1805 by Ataman Matvei Platov as the new capital of the Don Cossack Host. It was a centre of the anti-Bolshevik Don Cossacks in the Russian Civil War, and in 1962 a workers' protest there was put down with gunfire by Soviet troops, the Novocherkassk massacre. Its large Ascension Cathedral was completed in 1905.
