Nuba Mountains
The Nuba Mountains are a range of granite hills in South Kordofan in central Sudan, home to many Nuba peoples speaking different languages. Their hills long gave refuge from slave raiders. The Muslim kingdom of Taqali arose in the north-east of the range in the early 16th century, and the region was conquered by Egypt and later the Mahdist state in the 19th century.
