Kordofan
Kordofan is a region of present-day Sudan lying between Darfur and the Nile valley. It was a contested borderland over which the Darfur Sultanate and its eastern neighbours fought for control of trade and resources. Darfur's loss of Kordofan to Egyptian forces in 1821 was a significant blow that foreshadowed the sultanate's later decline.
