Nurek Dam

1961–1980 · 20th century

The Nurek Dam is an earth-fill hydroelectric dam on the Vakhsh river in Tajikistan, about 300 metres high and for decades the tallest dam in the world. Built by the Soviet Union between 1961 and 1980, it supplies most of the country's electricity and water for irrigation in the Vakhsh valley.
