Nyasaland African Congress

1944–1959 · 20th century

The Nyasaland African Congress was the first nationwide African political organisation in the British protectorate of Nyasaland, founded in 1944. It campaigned against the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland and, after Hastings Kamuzu Banda took the lead in 1958, was banned in the state of emergency of March 1959. Its supporters re-formed as the Malawi Congress Party.
