Shire Highlands
The Shire Highlands are an upland region of southern Malawi, east of the Shire River, around Blantyre and Zomba. Scottish missionaries and traders settled there from the 1870s, and in 1889 Britain declared a protectorate over the area to block Portuguese claims, the core of later Nyasaland. European estates grew coffee, tobacco and tea there using the thangata labour-tenancy system.
