Olav Engelbrektsson

c. 1480–1538 · 16th century

Olav Engelbrektsson was the last Catholic archbishop of Nidaros (Trondheim), from 1523, and the leading figure of the Norwegian council of the realm. He opposed Christian III during the Count's Feud and tried to defend Norway's separate status and the old church, but when Christian III prevailed he fled to the Netherlands in 1537. His flight ended Norway's independent council and opened the way for the Lutheran Reformation.
