Orang Laut
The Orang Laut, or sea people, are communities of maritime nomads who have long lived on boats in the waters around Sumatra, the Riau islands and the Malay Peninsula. They formed the core naval force of the Srivijaya Empire. Their seamanship and local knowledge made them effective in policing the straits, and Srivijaya secured their loyalty through material patronage rather than conventional military service.
