Os Lusíadas

1572 · 16th century · Also known as The Lusiads

Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads) is the national epic of Portugal, written by Luís de Camões and published in Lisbon in 1572. In ten cantos of ottava rima it tells of Vasco da Gama's voyage to India in 1497–1499 and, through it, the history of the Portuguese people, mixing classical gods with recent events. It is the most celebrated work of Portuguese literature.
