Pagondas

fl. 424 BCE · 5th century BCE

Pagondas was a Theban commander and Boeotarch who led the Boeotian army to victory over Athens at the Battle of Delium in 424 BCE. He persuaded his reluctant fellow commanders to fight, drew up the Thebans 25 ranks deep and sent cavalry round a hill to surprise the Athenian flank. His tactics are often seen as an early example of the deep formations later used by Epaminondas.
