Battle of Delium

424 BCE · 5th century BCE · Part of the Peloponnesian War

The Battle of Delium was fought in 424 BCE near Delium on the Boeotian coast during the Peloponnesian War. The Boeotian army under the Theban commander Pagondas, drawn up 25 ranks deep and supported by a surprise cavalry attack, defeated an Athenian army under Hippocrates, who was killed. The philosopher Socrates fought on the Athenian side, and the battle ended Athenian plans to take Boeotia.
