Battle of Delville Wood

1916 · 20th century · Part of the First World War

The Battle of Delville Wood was fought from 15 July to 3 September 1916 as part of the Battle of the Somme in northern France. The 1st South African Infantry Brigade was ordered to take the wood and hold it at all costs, and clung on for six days under intense German shelling and counter-attacks; of more than 3,000 men who went in, only about 750 came out unhurt. The South African National Memorial now stands there.
